It was with deep regret that the congregation learned of the sudden death of Mr David Moore on Tuesday 3rd September. His funeral on Sunday 8th September was one of the largest seen in our Warrenpoint Church. The Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance was conducted by the Rev Norman Hutton, with Mrs Isobel Beck presiding at the organ. After the committal in St Patrick’s Church of Ireland, Newry, the mourners went to the Warnock Hall for refreshments.

Our Harvest Service was held on Sunday 6th October when the minister, Rev Norman Hutton, welcomed the large congregation of visitors and friends. The praise was led by Warrenpoint Silver Band under their conductor, Mr Maurice McCabe. After the service featuring traditional hymns, readings and prayers conducted by Rev Hutton, the congregation enjoyed refreshments and fellowship.

It was with deep regret that we learned of the death of Mr George McElroy, a former member, who died on 15th October aged 91. A Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance for his life was held in Roselawn Crematorium and was conducted by the Rev Hutton.

In Rev Hutton’s absence on holiday on Sunday 20th October, Mr Sam Agnew conducted the service which was enjoyed by all present.

The Autumn Communion Service was held on Sunday 3rd November, at which the congregation used for the first time new individual glasses donated by Mrs Doris Hutton.

At the next service on Sunday 17th November Andrea Susan Wharton, the infant daughter of Robert and Lyn, was baptised by the Rev Hutton in accordance with Matthew Chapter 28 Verse 19 and was welcomed into the congregation.

We also welcomed a new family into our fellowship.

Mr Kenneth Wharton organised a sponsored walk for Saturday 23rd November. Thankfully the rain kept off until the walkers returned to the church for refreshments; to date £2610 has been raised for necessary repairs to the building.

Our Candlelight Carol Service was held on Sunday 1st December and this was one of the largest congregations for this service. There were many visitors, many of whom were present to witness the dedication of gifts to family members who had passed to higher service in the previous years. Mr David Wharton, on behalf of the congregation, asked the Rev Hutton to dedicate the following gifts: a Lectern in memory of Mr George and Mrs Mary O’Hara; an Elder’s Chair in memory of Mrs Sarah Holmes; another Elder’s Chair in memory of Mrs Molly McClure; and a pair of Hymn Boards in memory of Mr David Moore. The Rev Hutton also acknowledged the following gifts and dedicated the same: a new Notice Board and Communion Display Cabinet by Mr and Mrs Kenneth Wharton and family; the installation of a new kitchen by Mr and Mrs Ian Wharton and family; and a new vinyl floor covering for the kitchen by Mrs Agnes Wharton. It was most fitting that our first reading of the afternoon was read for us by Mr Alex Rogers, grandson of Mr and Mrs George O’Hara. The traditional service of Readings and Carols, led by Warrenpoint Silver Band, concluded with refreshments, which included Christmas Fayre. The main beneficiary of the Offering was Southern Area Hospice Services.

Our Christmas Service was held on Sunday 22nd December when our Special Visitor was Santa Claus who arrived with a gift for each child.

We ended the year with renewed enthusiasm and much hope to be able to carry out the necessary repairs to our Meeting House. We are very encouraged by the continuing growth in membership and assure everyone of a warm welcome in our 300-year-old church.

I give you a new commandment: love one another; as I have loved you, so you are to love one another. If there is this love among you, then everyone will know that you are my disciples.

John 13:34-35

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
